Biography of Laura Mulligan
Laura studied art in Galway and Dublin followed by a B.A. in Psychology (University College Dublin) in which she wrote her thesis on the Psychology of Art entitled "Art and the Intolerance of Ambiguity". Whil completing an M.A. in Psychology, Laura was accepted into her first group show in (the Armoury Gallery, Bank of Ireland, Dublin). After winning the Postgraduate Psychologist of the Year, Laura worked using psychology and art in schools in Dublin. She also lectured in Environmental Design at The Dublin School of Design for a number of years on such topics as The Psychology of the Built Environment, Build Cities Up or Out, How we Behave in Built Environments and redesigning the umbrella!
Due to growing interest in her paintings, coupled with an increasing desire to paint full time, Laura became a full-time artist. She has become established as a sought after contemporary Irish artist with her work hanging in many public and private portfolios in Ireland and beyond. Her unique paintings are immediately recognisable by her trademark vibrancy and energy. Her work has always been intriguing in that it is abstract yet accessible and wild yet meditative. Laura paints the meaning, the essence of the landscape, its shifting colours, moods and patterns. It is this unique approach that makes her work timeless and why she is often described as a contemporary Turner.
In 2016 the painting "Winter After The Volcano" was selected for inclusion in the State Art Collection of Ireland.
Laura has travelled extensively all around the world to stand in the landscapes that she intends to one day paint. Some of her travels include: The Arctic Circle, Tibet, China, Mexico (visiting Frida Kahlo's studio), Thailand, Hawaii, The Azores, The Virgin Islands, criss-crossing the USA and Canada, and most of Europe and North Africa. Newfoundland was explored in 2019 and Iceland in 2022 and 2023.
